Hermann Offers Prime Viewing, Events for Tour of Missouri

September 12, 2007 | For Immediate Release

The first Tour of Missouri professional cycling race will be passing through Hermann on September 15 and activities are being planned that will make this scenic town on the Missouri River a perfect place to share the excitement and watch the racers go by.

Tour of Missouri events in Hermann begin on September 14 with a King of the Mountain Time Trial and a free concert featuring Badlands at 7 p.m. at the amphitheatre; on September 15, there will be a 30 mile Seven Hills of Hermann Bike Ride, a youth race and bike safety check, and entertainment at Stone Hill and Hermannhof Wineries.

Racers will enter Hermann around 1 p.m., crossing the new bridge over the Missouri River. Their route through Hermann will be five miles and include two timed events—a sprint line in front of Stone Hill and a King of the Mountain climb on Highway 100 East, just past Hermannhof Winery near the city industrial park.

Hermann is included in Stage 5 of the race, which runs from Jefferson City to St. Charles.

“We are very proud to be a part of the inaugural Tour of Missouri and are excited by the potential it offers for us to showcase Hermann along with the rest of our state,” said Hermann Mayor Norb Englert. “With 120 riders representing 20 different countries, this truly is an international event. Our community is working together to make Hermann a perfect place to watch the racers and be part of this special event.”

Englert said activities in Hermann are designed for people who are following the racers at various locations during the week as well as those who want to experience the race at one location.

“We have plenty of wonderful viewing areas along the route through Hermann, including both a sprint line and king of the mountain. Our wineries, restaurants, shops, and museums will all be open; we invite everyone to enjoy the Tour of Missouri in Hermann.”

Since streets along the route will be closed as the group of racers passes through, everyone is encouraged to be in town not later than 12:30 p.m.

Registration for the First Bank King of the Mountain Time Trial starts at 3:30 p.m. Friday at 1st and Gutenberg. The event will begin at 5 p.m., with medals awarded to the top finishers in each age group for both men and women. The entry fee is $10 and everyone will receive a tee shirt.

Registration for the Seven Hills of Hermann Bike Ride, sponsored by the Hermann Wine Trail, will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday at Stone Hill Winery. The ride will begin at 8, and everyone will receive a tee shirt and finisher medal.

Additional information on both events is available by calling Jeff at 573-486-3561.

There will be cycling activities for youth in Downtown Hermann on Saturday, starting with a bike safety check and obstacle course at 10 a.m. and fun races at 11 along Wharf Street. Registration will be at George Johnson Park, at Schiller and Wharf Street, and there is no entry fee. All participants will receive prizes. Sponsors of the Kids Bike Race are Hermann Ride, Rest & Go Bike Shop, Hermann Fitness Source, Southwest Medical Associates, and Hermann Medical Arts. Age groups include tricycles, training wheels, and two wheels for ages 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12.

Hermannhof Winery will have special food and drink sales on their patio and feature entertainment by St. Louis guitarist and songwriter Russ Anderson from 1-4 p.m.

Stone Hill Winery will have special food and drink sales, music starting at 11 a.m. by Strawfoot, and a balloon release.

There is no admission charge for activities at Stone Hill and Hermannhof. Other wineries along the Hermann Wine Trail will also be open during the weekend.

From 6-10 p.m. Saturday, the group Catch-22 will be performing at OakGlenn Winery. There is a $5 cover charge.
