Governor Blunt to Lead Hermann’s Dream Celebration
October 30, 2006 | For Immediate Release
Missouri Governor Matt Blunt will lead a community-wide celebration Monday (October 30), in honor of Hermann’s selection as one of 10 cities for the Governor’s DREAM (Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri) Initiative.
The event will be held on the corner of 1st and Schiller Streets, in the heart of Hermann’s large downtown historic district. It will begin at 3:45 p.m. with music, followed by remarks from Governor Blunt and other dignitaries at 4:00. After the ceremony there will be more entertainment and the city’s annual Community Appreciation Day, with old style Hermann knockwurst and pink lemonade served.
Entertainment will include the Hermann Apostle Band and the 28 members of the Hermann High School Kammerchor, the school’s select choir.
In the event of rain, the activities will be moved to the Hermannhof Festhalle.
“We were honored to have been chosen one of Missouri’s first DREAM cities and we are further honored to have Governor Blunt coming to Hermann to help our citizens celebrate this recognition,” said Mayor Norbert Englert. “This initiative is very important for the long term growth of our city and I believe many, many citizens will turn out to show our enthusiasm for being a DREAM city.
“By working together on this program during the next few years, we will see dramatic changes in Hermann that will make this an even better place for both residents and visitors.”
Representatives from the sponsoring state agencies will be coming to Hermann on November 1 for an extensive planning session with a local team to develop an action plan.
Governor Blunt announced Hermann’s selection on September 26 at the annual Governor’s Conference on Economic Development in St. Louis. Hermann was one of 98 cities who applied for the program.
The DREAM Initiative will help communities more efficiently and effectively engage in downtown redevelopment and revitalization efforts and attract new private investment opportunities in the hearts of their communities.
It provides selected communities streamlined access to available programs for infrastructure improvements, historic preservation, affordable housing, community services, business development and job creation.
Other cities chosen as Missouri’s first DREAM communities were: Cape Girardeau, Excelsior Springs, Hannibal, Kennett, Neosho, St. Joseph, Sedalia, Washington, and West Plains.
